We were girls together. We were raised in rural Nova Scotia. We both poured our sweat into the salt of the Atlantic. The same hard pebbles bruised our running feet, on beaches and on driveways, the same trees gave us shelter, and the same fields of grass left strange lines on our skin.

Except, it wasn't like that really.
