Galileo
recognized the property of heaviness, or weight, as measured by the least force
necessary to prevent the fall of a body. A body supported against the action of
its weight is in equilibrium under equal and opposite forces: when the supporting
force is withdrawn, the weight, that is the natural force due to gravity, produces
acceleration.
